Rowe fuels Rockets past Clay

Tara Rowe scores 24 in
71-54 win over Lady Tigers

Rockcastle County (14-3) got a bit of revenge Saturday afternoon when they knocked off the Lady Tigers 71-54 at CCHS gym. Clay County (12-3) won the first meeting (Jan. 3) between the two teams after rallying from 14 down in the final period to win 55-53 in overtime.

On Saturday, the Lady Tigers scored the games first six points but found themselves trailing 16-15 after the opening period. The visiting Lady Rockets out scored Clay 17-3 in the second period to post a 33-19 lead at intermission. Priscilla Wagers led Clay with nine first-half points. Tara Rowe and Johnna Abney had nine and eight points respectively, to lead Rockcastle.

The play of Amanda Gilbert, Kari Ealy and Wagers helped Clay County pull to within 39-33 prior to Amanda picking up her fourth foul at the 3:04 mark. But the Lady Rockets nailed three three's, around a basket and a foul shot by Jayme "Skooly" Gilbert and her sister Amanda, to go ahead 48-36. Clay got a basket by "Skooly" and two foul shots by Wagers to close within 48-40 with 0:03 remaining in the third but Jessie Hayes nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 51-40 Lady Rockets lead.

The home team managed to claw back within striking distance at 55-50 with just under five-minutes to play as Amanda Gilbert poured in nine fourth-quarter points. But Rowe keyed a 7-0 Lady Rocket run with two baskets and Clay got no closer. Rowe finished with a game high 24 points; Heather Hammond added 14 points; Johnna Abney had 11; Jessie Hayes scored eight; Ashley Mink and Kristen Clontz had six each; Katie Parsons had two. Amanda Gilbert led Clay with 17 points and seven rebounds; Wagers scored 15, all coming in the first three periods, and had six rebounds; Ealy added nine points; Jayme Gilbert had eight points and five rebounds; Monica Bowling scored three and Paige Jackson two.

Clay lost the battle of the boards 30-23 and shot just 43% from two-point range while Rockcastle made 61%. From three-point range Clay shot 20% while the Lady Rockets shot 35% from behind the arc.

Clay shoots 62%, routs Lady Colonels 62-35

After leading 25-21 early in the second half, Clay County hosted a clinic over the next 15 minutes on "how to play the game of basketball" racing to a 60-29 lead before settling for a 62-35 win over Whitley County. The Lady Tigers held the 13th Region's top scorer, Heather Taylor (26.1), to just five point and only one field goal while posting a balanced scoring attack of their own. The game was tied on three occasions, 4-4, 8-8 and 14-14 before Clay pulled ahead 25-19 at intermission.

Senior guard Priscilla Wagers and freshman guard Jayme "Skooly" Gilbert led the Lady Tigers with 17 points apiece while senior forward Amanda Gilbert tossed in 13. Kari Ealy had two three-pointers for six points; 6-1 sophomore Kelly Jones added five points; eighth-graders Paige Jackson and Maleah Roberts each scored two. "Skooly" made 6 of 7 shots from the floor and 5 of 7 free throw attempts and led the team with nine rebounds, four steals and seven assists. As a team, Clay shot 62% from the two-point range while holding the Lady Colonels to just 38% shooting. With the win, Clay improved to 13-3.

Lady Tigers 38, Whitley County 24

Maleah Roberts led Clay County with 12 points; Stephanie Jackson added nine; Jessica Smallwood had seven; Mariah Aubrey tossed in five points; Sarah Burchell and Bethani Herron each had two and Gemma Gray one.

Monday January 13 - JV game (overtime)

Lady Tigers 34 - Whitley County 32

Trailing 30-27, Clay County's Stephanie Jackson nailed a three-pointer with less than a minute to play and sent the game into overtime. In the overtime period, Page Jackson scored to put the Lady Tigers up 34-32. Whitley had a chance to tie with eight seconds to go but didn't get a shot off. Jackson led Clay with 10 points; Jackson added seven; Maleah Roberts scored six points; Amanda House added four; Jenna Wilson and Gemma Gray each had three and Deronna Moore scored one.

Monday January 20 - Freshman Game

Lady Tigers 46 - Rockcastle County 17

Roberts scores 9 pts. to lead a balanced attack


Clay County's Lady Tiger freshman team pounded visiting Rockcastle County 46-17 Monday afternoon. Maleah Roberts led a balanced scoring attack with nine points; Gemma Gray and Mariah Aubrey added six apiece; Tamara Williams and Jessica Smallwood scored five points each; Whitney Combs and Stephanie Jackson tossed in four apiece; Paige Jackson added three; Felicia Hubbard and Bethani Herron each scored two.
