Clay's bid for upset falls short

Clay County (11-5) gave Number 5 Jackson County (13-1) quite a battle before falling 54-41 at McKee Friday. The Lady Tigers trailed by only 24-19 at half time after freshman Maleah Roberts and sophomore Jayme Gilbert scored eight and seven points, respectively.

In the third period Jackson County shot to a 41-26 lead aided by Kourtney Tyra, Whitney Moore and Danielle Roaden, who each nailed long three point baskets.

However, the Lady Tigers fought back to within 41-35 with 5:28 remaining in the game as Jenna Wilson and Holly Hoskins connected on back to back three pointers for a 9-0 run.

But the home team got solid inside play from 6-6 All-State center Sarah Elliott and clutch outside shooting from Tyra to Moore down the stretch and pull away. The Lady Generals were led in scoring by Tyra and Elliott, with 14 points apiece. Tyra, a seventh grader, made four of seven three point shots. Moore finished with 11 points; Kenni Lakes had eight and Roaden seven.

Clay's Gilbert led all scorers with 17 points; Roberts finished with eight; Jenna Wilson scored three points; Hoskins had five; Kelly Jones, Page Jackson and Gemma Gray each scored two.
